GASTONIA, N.C.,None — A Gastonia man is accused of smashing a church van with an ax.
Justin Kirkland told police he left the van parked at his fiancee's home on East 9th Avenue Saturday night. A neighbor came at him with the axe and even held it to his throat, he said.
Police identified the alleged attacker as Kenneth Glaze, Jr.
Kirkland, a youth worker at Freewill Baptist Church, said he was not afraid during the ordeal.
"I just didn't want to provoke him in a way he'd try to hurt me or anything," he said.
Officials have said what caused the incident.
According to the state's Department of Corrections website, Glaze has served time in prison. He has been convicted on charges of larceny, safecracking and assaulting a police officer.
The arrests date back to 1978, the website shows.
