'Nobody plans to lose': Cam Newton discusses shoulder procedure, 2018 season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For the first time, we are hearing from Carolina Panthers Cam Newton weeks after he opted for surgery to repair his ailing right throwing shoulder.

The first video from Newton's new Youtube Channel showed what we had never seen - driving to the hospital, prepping for surgery, consulting after the procedure with team Physician Pat Connor, and his thoughts about his shoulder and the team's season.

The team announced Newton had an "arthroscopic procedure" Thursday, Jan. 25 to investigate the cause of nagging shoulder issues that caused the quarterback to miss the final two games of the 2018 regular season.

There is no timetable for when he begin throwing again, but officials said Newton's recovery began immediately.

In a video released Thursday, Newton opened up about his frustrations, saying he believed his team could have been Super Bowl contenders.

"This year was rather interesting, a roller coaster to say the least," Newton said. "At one particular point in time, I felt as if we were Super Bowl contenters and as the season kept progressing and going forward, I knew the status of my arm was uncertain, but we were still winning games."

Newton said his irritation came to head during the Panthers' 7-game losing streak.

He said the situation put him in a dark place, where he did not want to be around his family, but it also scared him how vulnerable he was.

"It didn't probably get to me until the fourth or fifth game we kinda lost. And not only was the losing effecting me, it was my body and my should in particular was just nagging all year," Newton said.

The quarterback also had surgery in March of 2017 to repair a partially torn rotator cuff.

In the video, Newton said most people in this situation would be nervous or scared. He said he just wants it all to stop.

"The shoulder, the achiness, whatever the f*** I have to do," Newton said "Nobody plans to lose, nobody goes into a game and says 'We got some cushion we can lose this game.' I take it very offensive when a person says you can't win them all and yes, you can. You can win every single game."
