Woman killed after car crashes into tree in Lincoln County, troopers say

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A woman was killed after her car ran off the road in Lincoln county and hit a tree, investigators said.

It happened around 10 a.m. on Friday on Highway 274 near Flay Road, which is near Cherryville, according to troopers.

Troopers said a 1997 Ford Mustang driven by Misty Lovelace Palmer, 47, of Newton, was traveling north on Highway 274 when it drove off the right side of the road. It then drove back onto the roadway, crossed the center line, and traveled off the left side of the road, hitting a tree.

Palmer died at the scene. She wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, highway patrol said.

Investigators said Palmer’s excessive speed led to the crash.

Highway 274 was closed in the area for two hours while troopers investigated.

Editor’s Note: A previous version of this story had a different name for the victim. Highway patrol shared that initial information, but has since corrected her name. We have updated our story to reflect that change.
