Suspect arrested after man killed, another hurt in Derita neighborhood shooting

Hosta Drive shooting

CHARLOTTE — Police have arrested a suspect accused of killing a man and injuring another in a shooting late Monday night in the Derita neighborhood.

The shooting happened just after 9:30 p.m. on Hosta Drive in north Charlotte, near Gibbon and Sugar Creek roads.

When officers got to the area, they found 24-year-old Tevonte Epps, who had been shot in the parking lot. He later died at the hospital.

A second person was also hurt in the shooting, but is expected to be OK.

Authorities have not said what led up to the shooting.

“It does not appear just to be a random incident,” CMPD Maj. Allan Rutledge said. “So, indications are that the subjects are acquaintances or known to each other.”

Throughout the investigation, detectives identified 18-year-old Jaiveon Smith as a suspect in the case and issued warrants for his arrest.

CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team worked with the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and found Smith in Georgia, where he was eventually arrested.

Officials said he will be extradited back to Mecklenburg County and charged with murder, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

No other information has been released.
