CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ben Shoniker, a 12-year-old from Harrisburg, had all his dreams come true Thursday.
Shoniker has genetic abnormalities, including a growth hormone deficiency and moderate intellectual and conduct disorders. His mother, Rebecca Shoniker, said doctors are still puzzled.
"His path is very uncertain. He doesn't fit in any box, but it is what it is. He is a ray of sunshine. We have struggles like any other family, and we focus on the positives," Rebecca Shoniker said.
Dream On 3 makes sports dreams come true for kids with life-altering or developmental disabilities.
On Thursday, the organization made it possible for Ben to meet one of his favorite mascots.
Ben's mother said he has always loved mascots because they cheer and make people happy.
When the Chick-fil-A cow walked into Ben's classroom at Pioneer Community School, Ben shouted, "Hi cow!"
Ben encouraged his classmates to stand up and cheer.
Afterwards, Ben's face lit up when he was able to put on his own miniature cow costume. It was just the start of an all-day adventure planned for Ben and his mom, dad and older sister.
"He is loved by so many people, but he just brings so much joy and love into so many people's lives. We are just blessed to have him in our lives," Rebecca Shoniker said.
Dream On 3 also gave Ben exclusive access to all the Atlantic Coast Conference mascots ahead of the Championship Game this weekend at Bank of America Stadium.
Thursday evening, he joined them on a trolley ride through uptown and then went to a Christmas tree lighting.
