14-year-old credited for saving family after fire broke out at Burke County home

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A 14-year-old boy is credited for saving the lives of several family members, including his grandparents, after a fire broke out at their home in Burke County Friday morning.

As many as five different fire departments including one from McDowell County responded to the scene. The initial call was that someone was still trapped in the home.

The home had about half a dozen people inside when the fire started. The teenager told Channel 9′s Dave Faherty that he woke up to smoke filling up his bedroom and immediately went to alert his grandparents and others of the fire.

The teen said the family got out of the home with only what they were wearing.

First responders said when they got to the scene, flames were shooting out the backside of the home.

Officials are still working to determine what caused the fire. The family believes the fire did start in one of the bedrooms.

This is an ongoing investigation. Check back with wsoctv.com for updates.
