High school football game called off after reports of gunfire; police say no evidence of shooting

SALISBURY, N.C. — A high school football game in Salisbury descended into chaos after someone reported seeing a gun and the stadium was evacuated on Friday night.

The game between Salisbury High School and West Rowan High School was called off after players dropped to the ground and fans stampeded from the bleachers.

A viewer sent Channel 9 a photo of what appears to be football players staying low on the ground.

On Monday, the Salisbury Police Department provided an update saying someone yelled “gun” causing the panic that led to the mass evacuation.

Three people were hurt, although not seriously, after falling while fleeing the stadium, police said.

Officers said there was no credible threat as no evidence of a gun or shell casings were found.

Police told Channel 9 reporter Hannah Goetz on Monday that information was still limited surrounding the incident.
