3 CMPD officers honored after saving woman from burning car

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Three Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers were honored Friday for putting their lives on the line while a woman was trapped inside a burning car.

Officers Jonathan Colby, Stephen Faulkner and Sangwon Lee were named First Responders of the Year for their heroic actions on Aug. 16, 2016, when a woman crashed into a pole on Fourth Street near uptown Charlotte and her car burst into flames.

Not only was the car in flames, but it was also covered by an active power line. Lee said he ignored that in order to save the woman trapped inside. They were concerned the car could explode at any moment.

Colby said the three of them were just doing their jobs.

“In our line of work and our training, it’s just from A to B, you work line to line,” Colby said.

Channel 9 anchor Allison Latos sat down with the three officers after their harrowing rescue and they shared their story. We’re told that coverage inspired the nomination for the award.
