4-year-old injured in Lancaster playground accident

LANCASTER, S.C. — Lancaster police are investigating after a child accidentally hung himself on a day care playground.

Police said although they are conducting an investigation, the incident appears to be an accident and they don't believe any charges will result.

The accident happened at the Burbee Place Early Care and Education Center on West Meeting Street on Wednesday. Police said a 4-year-old boy tied a jump rope to a slide and put it around his arm. When he went down the slide, the jump rope somehow got around the boy's neck.

Police said a teacher saw the child on the slide and was able to quickly free him. The boy was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte as a precaution.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the Department of Labor are not involved in the investigation.
