6th-grade class raises $1,600 to help Hurricane Sandy victims

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — Some sixth-graders at an elementary school in Catawba County are helping victims of Hurricane Sandy.

A sixth-grade class at Startown Elementary started selling crafts to help with the recovery efforts. They organized the class like a business, with each student having one or more specific jobs.

One class raised more than $1,600, which they donated to the American Red Cross.

“Wonderful, wonderful,” teacher Stephanie Kelly said. “I have enjoyed those kids so much. They have inspired me. They really have.”

The Red Cross said the money will be spent in New York and New Jersey to help provide meals to families impacted by the storm.
