CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The UNC Charlotte Marriott Hotel & Conference Center expects to welcome its first guests next month.
The finishing touches are being put in place, but some uncertainty looms about how operations will ramp up as the pandemic stretches on, says Mike Nelson, who has been tapped as general manager.
“It’s just a very strange time to be opening a business,” he says. “I’m very blessed to be able to have this opportunity for the team that we’re creating here in an economic time that has been very difficult on the hospitality industry.”
That $87 million project will be owned by The UNC Charlotte Foundation. Sage Hospitality of Denver, Colorado, will operate the facility.
Nelson recently spoke with the CBJ about the hotel, its impact on UNCC and the challenge of opening during the Covid-19 pandemic. Read the full interview and check out photos here.
