Action 9: Restaurant fails to honor coupons, family says

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte family said they bought a coupon book to help save money on dining out, but one of the restaurants they visited did not honor some of the coupons like they were printed.

Conrad Nelsen, 10, sold three coupon books to neighbors to raise money for his school.

"When you sell more, you get to win prizes," said Nelsen.

Nelsen's dad also bought the $20 coupon book printed by Go Play Save, but Gregg Nelsen said he had trouble using a coupon from Buffalo Wings and Rings.

"As a customer I couldn't believe I was getting the resistance I was getting," he said.

Gregg said he gave the waitress a coupon for one free appetizer with the purchase of two entrees and asked for water.

That is when the waitress pointed to a sign that said all coupons require the purchase of two adult beverages.

"Nowhere on this coupon does it say that you have to buy two adult beverages," said Gregg.

Gregg's coupon also said one coupon per person, per visit, but again the Buffalo sign said something different.

"Only one coupon per table, that is not what this coupon says," said Gregg.

He said it may sound Petty, but the coupons could cause families to spend more than they had planned.

Action 9 paid the restaurant a visit. The owner wasn't in, but sent Action 9 an email defending his policy.

Frank La Fragola, Jr. said he wanted his guest to enjoy additional savings, but not at the cost of him continually losing money.

Action 9 went to the co-owner of the coupon book company, Brian Granger.

Granger said, "The restaurant, you know, really needs to honor what was agreed to and printed."

Later, he said the restaurant owner agreed to make some changes, he will allow up to three coupons per table, but will not budge on the beverage issue.
