Air quality impacts flights to and from the Charlotte area

CHARLOTTE — Many of you may have noticed the hazy skies across the Charlotte area.

While this smoke is causing issues for others across the county, Channel 9 Meteorologist John Ahrens said it is not a health hazard for those in the Queen City.

Despite previous reports that our air quality was at codes orange and red, Ahrens said that our area is actually at a code yellow.

A code yellow is typical for a summer day, according to Ahrens.

He said the biggest impact we will see is at the airport, due to the smoke being a lot thicker in the northeast.

More than 70 flights have been delayed at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and over 200 have been delayed at LaGuardia Airport.

Some of those flights impacted are to and from Charlotte.
