Albemarle police de-escalate situation to apprehend armed man, officials say

ALBEMARLE, N.C. — Police in Albemarle de-escalated a violent domestic dispute Thursday afternoon that ended with the apprehension of an armed man, officials said.

Officers responded to a disturbance at a home in the 1200 block of Walnut Street at about 9:30 a.m.

The man at the home reportedly threatened to kill a woman and shot a pet, killing it.

The Albemarle Police Department’s Special Response Team and State Bureau of Investigation responded to the home to negotiate with the suspect, Roger Lee Jernigan Jr.

Negotiators with the Albemarle Police and SBI began communication with the male subject.

The man got into a pickup truck around 12:30 p.m. and that was when officers moved in, taking Jernigan into custody.

There were no injuries reported.

Jernigan was charged with two counts of communicating threats, one count of possession of a firearm by a felon, felony cruelty to animals and discharging a firearm within city limits.
