Atrium Health to more than double pediatric intensive care unit at Levine Children’s Hospital

CHARLOTTE — Atrium Health is about to kick off another construction project, this time at Levine Children’s Hospital.

Construction is set to begin July 31 on a 24-bed pediatric intensive care unit that will add to the hospital’s current 20-bed PICU floor. Dr. Dwight Bailey, Levine’s medical director of pediatric critical care medicine, told CBJ that as Charlotte and the surrounding region continues to grow, so does the need for additional pediatric services at the hospital.

As a result, Atrium has been working on plans for the expansion for some time.

“We have been evaluating this project for years and now have focused in and put together a plan and resources to build a second unit,” he said. “As the community and areas around it grow, we need to grow with them. There’s also an increasing number of referrals that come in from communities further away.”
