Deputies identify woman killed in double shooting near Lenoir

LENOIR, N.C. — A woman died and a man was critically injured in a Tuesday morning shooting in Caldwell County, deputies told Channel 9.

The shootings were reported on Wheeler Hollow Place near Lenoir. Authorities said two people were found shot outside a home.

Deputies said they believe the incident was a murder-attempted suicide.

A woman was found dead inside a car and deputies identified her as Heidi Hamilton.

A neighbor called officers before 9 a.m. Tuesday and described hearing multiple shots.

A man with a gunshot wound, found near the car outside the home, was airlifted to Mission Memorial Hospital in Asheville.

Deputies believe the shooter was the victim's boyfriend, Edward Price Jr. His family said he had been hospitalized after threatening to harm himself.

"He kept thinking stuff was trying to get to him and his family and we tried to get him help,” cousin Ira Edwards said.

Price’s family said he got out of a local hospital Monday after making threats he would kill himself.

"They should never have happened,” Edwards said. “I don't know what they were thinking when they let him out. Even the doctor said he needed in there and help and everything."

The hospital released a statement Tuesday that said, “Providing a safe and appropriate discharge for our patients and their families is a top priority and we are saddened by the news of this tragic situation. Due to patient confidentiality laws, we are unable to provide information about an individual’s diagnosis or treatment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this difficult time.”

"At this point we are not going to comment on a motive,” Caldwell County Capt. BJ Fore said. “We are not going to comment on what we think happened until we get the investigation going a little more. We can tell you this: We don't feel like the community is in any danger. We are not looking for a shooter on the scene or anything like that. We think we've secured the area, and that is not a possibility. "
