Bicyclist dies after being hit by car while cycling 67 miles for 67th birthday

MATTHEWS, N.C. — A man who was riding a bike this weekend on his birthday died from his injuries after he was hit by a driver in a car in Matthews, police said.

It happened Sunday around 12:45 p.m. on Matthews Township Parkway, between Sardis Road and Monroe Road. At the scene, first responders found 67-year-old Bruce Alan Davis. He was taken to the hospital where he later died, police said.

Davis’ family and friends said he was celebrating his birthday when he was hit. Davis was a member of the Matthews Run Club and a cross-fit enthusiast.

“He took his cross-country bike ride last year. And how happy he was to dip the front wheel of his bicycle into the Atlantic ocean,” Davis’ teammate John Carriker said.

Police said the investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed at this point. A friend of Davis’ says he cycling 67 miles for a special reason.

“I find it very sad because yesterday was also his birthday,” Deanna O’Connor said. “And he was cycling 67 miles for his 67th birthday.”

Davis was known for his good sportsmanship and skills.

“You would hear people talk about Bruce’s stride and how he just would lock down and keep that consistent stride, face forward up the hills,” O’Connor said.

The case is still active. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Kimmlingen at 704-841-6792, or email mkimmlingen@matthewsnc.gov.
