Boy traumatized after being hit with whip at local rodeo, mother says

A mother told Channel 9 someone hit her teen son with a whip two weeks ago at the Mint Hill Rodeo.

She wants the person responsible arrested.

“At first, I couldn’t believe that someone would do that on purpose,” said the woman, who did not want to be identified. “I thought it was a mistake.”

She said since this incident, her son has had a rough time being teased and picked on.

“To this day, my child is suffering from poor sleep, eating, nervousness, nail-biting,” the woman said.

She said her son and his friends were at the Mint Hill Rodeo tossing a football around. The mother said the ball hit a truck and the men around that truck got upset and made a circle.

“Not around the boys but near the boys and showed off by doing tricks with this whip,” she said.

She said that’s when one of the men allegedly hit her son with the whip.

The police report classifies it as simple assault and said the victim was struck once with a whip.

The mother said she believes it was a deliberate attack that was racially motivated.

“If it was a belt, a stick, a rock, probably not, but it’s a whip and we all know what the history of a whip is,” she said.

The incident was reported to the police two days after it happened.

“This person needs to come forward and show his face because he’s a coward because he ran away,” she said. “He knows what he did was wrong, or he would not have ran.”

Channel 9 asked Mint Hill police about the status of its investigation and we were told that it is ongoing and active. There is no word if the police are close to making an arrest in the case.
