Burke Co. businesses raided on suspicion of illegal gaming, officials say

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Burke County deputies raided four businesses they said were running illegal gaming operations, The Morganton News Herald reported.

The raid was Friday on Highway 70 east in Morganton.

Charges and arrests are pending for those involved with the gaming locations that were raided.

Local citizens have complained to law enforcement officials, alleging crimes near the businesses.

The gaming businesses pay cash prizes to customers, which is illegal in North Carolina, according to Burke County Sheriff Steve Whisenant.

The Sheriff's Office said the raids are part of the first phase of a long investigation.
