CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — Random safety checks with metal detectors are coming to another Charlotte-area school district.
Cabarrus County Schools announced it plans to check students for weapons at middle and high schools.
Channel 9 learned parents have started receiving phone calls about the measure that the district says it plans to roll out in the spring.

District officials said they want to deter students from bringing weapons to school and believe metal detectors will help do that.
It’s not clear how they will randomly check students, whether it will be by school or classroom or both.
School staff will be trained, and students will be prepped on what to expect before the metal detectors are put in place.

One parent Channel 9 spoke with said this would make him more comfortable sending his child to school.
"I feel pretty good about it. Most important thing to me is my kid’s safety. If it means being uncomfortable and going through a metal detector, so be it. At least she comes home,” Mike Rinaldo said.
The district said the safety checks will begin in phases and plans to have them fully in place this fall.
