Caregiver charged after 17-year-old girl drowns in bathtub, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said it is conducting a death investigation near the University area Friday afternoon.

Officers said they were called to a home on Ligon Court around 1:08 p.m where they found a 17-year-old girl who they said drowned in a bathtub.

Officials said after performing CPR, the girl was taken to Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center - Main where she was later pronounced dead.

After investigating, officers learned the girl was mentally and physically disabled and was living at the home with her paid caregiver.

The caregiver, Nikiya Meeks, was then interviewed by detectives. She was then charged with patient abuse - culpably negligent conduct causing death.

Meeks is being held at the Mecklenburg County Jail.
