Catawba Co. residents continue cleanup from storms

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — Several people in Catawba County are still cleaning up from the flooding and debris from this week's storms on Saturday.

The water level on Saturday is about 2 feet over full capacity. On Friday night, it was dangerously close to 4 feet, which would mean water in people's living rooms.

The lake was swallowing people's yards and coming dangerously close to their doors.

On Saturday, the yards were still covered with water, but it has receded considerably and people were enjoying the lake instead of fearing for their homes.

They are not out of the woods yet, but people feel better.

"We were here for the Fourth, and it kind of put a damper on that. Glad it didn't get as bad as it could have, but it's still a big mess," said Lake resident Kari Lackey.

Eyewitness News spoke with the emergency management coordinator Saturday and she said they expect the water to go down even more, but with heavy rain expected in the next 48 hours, they will be monitoring the situation closely.
