CMPD: Driver identified after fatally crashing in eastern Mecklenburg County

CHARLOTTE — Police are investigating a deadly crash late Thursday night in east Mecklenburg County.

Investigators said the wreck happened just before midnight on Camp Stewart Road at Fallen Cedar Lane when the driver ran off the road.

That driver, 24-year-old Devon Smith, was pronounced dead at the scene.

After investigating, officers said Smith was speeding when the car went off the road and struck a culvert. The car then went into the air before landing at the intersection of Fallen Cedar Lane and Camp Stewart Road.

Police said the car then began to roll and Smith was thrown from the car. Officials said that Smith was not wearing a seat belt.

Authorities said they believe excessive speeding and alcohol use contributed to the crash.

No other details have been released at this point.
