CMPD investigating after swimmer drowns in Lake Wylie, another taken to hospital

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating after a swimmer drowned in Lake Wylie Friday afternoon.

Authorities were called to the scene near the McDowell Nature Preserve on the North Carolina side of the lake.

Officers said three people were near the water and two went in for a swim. Both began to struggle and one was pulled from the water and taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

The second person was found underwater about 30 minutes later and was pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of the swimmers have not been released.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew above the scene and could see multiple rescue boats there.

No other details have been released at this point.
