CMPD searches for shooter after woman in bed grazed by bullet

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Bullet holes are a reminder of a terrifying night for people inside a southeast Charlotte apartment complex after gunshots rang out Sunday night.

Quay Wallace had his 3-month-old baby with him and was walking back from a nearby park when he heard shots at the apartments.

“After they shot off like five shots, it sounded like they stopped for a minute and they shot again. 'Pow, pow, pow, pow, pow!' and they sped off," Wallace told Channel 9. He said he covered his baby and ran back toward the park.

Police said a bullet grazed a woman's back while she was lying in bed at the Hampton Creste apartments on North Wendover Road. Several bullet holes span two apartments. Both had people inside including children.

A woman answered the door and said she didn't want to go on camera, but she told Eyewitness News anchor Liz Foster she didn't know why anyone would shoot into the apartment.

Monday, several CMPD squad cars were in the neighborhood.

Neighbors told Channel 9 this is the second time shots have been fired in their apartment community in just a matter of days.

"It's getting kind of out of hand," Shante Ashford said. She's worried if the violence doesn't stop, one of the many kids who live there will get hurt.

"You have kids down here running, playing every day and bullets have no names, no eyes, so, it's scary," Ashford said.

Channel 9 asked police several questions, including who they are looking for or what the vehicle involved looks like.

No further details were released and the investigation is ongoing.

There have been three aggravated-assault calls involving guns in the area in the past month, according to a crime-mapping tool.
