CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced on Thursday that the district will keep Dr. Melissa Balknight on as acting superintendent while it searches for a permanent leader.
Balknight had announced plans to retire Jan. 1. 2027. However, the school board said she will remain beyond that date to provide stability as the district continues its search for a new superintendent.
The board has formed a committee to oversee the superintendent search.
The decision comes as CMS responds to a federal investigation tied to the district’s financial controversies. The FBI and Department of Justice have opened their own investigation but have not specified what it is related to.
CMS released a statement saying, in part, that it will cooperate with any requests from law enforcement.
The district is also under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation, the state auditor and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
