LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A Lincoln County commission meeting was held where the chairman wasn't present during its first Muslim invocation.
The invocation went on for more than two minutes. Once it was over, chair Carrol Mitchem took his seat, but his absence was not addressed until the end of the meeting.
After that exchange, commissioners banned prayer from the start of the meetings and instead will have a moment of silence.
The board voted months ago to allow anyone in the faith community to lead the invocation.
At the time, Mitchem told Channel 9 he would walk out if a Muslim led the prayer, and as a video shows, he was not present for the prayer.
