Concord community battles Charlotte developer over mixed-use project plans

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Alison Conover can remember when she heard that Charlotte-based MPV Properties proposed a residential-above-retail development next door to her upscale subdivision in Concord. She remembers being excited about having such a trendy, new concept coming to Cabarrus County.

“We were promised something like a mini-Birkdale was going to be on that corner,” she recalls.

Now, thanks to a change in Concord’s rules for a “planned unit development” and the passage of time, the building of Christenbury Commons has been stymied for months.

MPV has had its rezoning request denied by Concord City Council and now the Christenbury HOA has hired Concord land-use attorney Jim Scarborough in an effort to bring back the idea of a small Birkdale in Cabarrus County. The firm plans 135,000 square feet of commercial space and 170 apartments in up to seven buildings.
