CHARLOTTE, N.C. — We want to run a correction, and assure you about the quality and safety of your drinking water.
Yesterday, our Washington D.C. bureau sent us a study from the "Environmental Working Group."
It detailed TCE, or Trichloroethylene, a chemical that causes cancer in drinking water.
Our report claimed it was present in Charlotte and Gastonia's water supply.
That is not true.
As we looked through the database, TCE was found only in groundwater in the Rocky Ridge neighborhood in Charlotte and the Pineville subdivision in Gastonia.
It was not in any city or community water supply.
Charlotte Water sent us a statement:
"We have not detected TCE, Trichloroethylene, in Charlotte’s drinking water. I’m confident if you review the EPA’s website, the state website and our website, you will find that parameter is on the non-detect list because it is tested for and not detected in test results."
