MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — North Carolina ended 2019 ranked ninth in the nation for clean-energy jobs, but it was among the states hardest hit by job losses in that field as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic’s economic slowdown.
North Carolina dropped from 112,710 workers in the industry at the of 2019 to about 91,500 workers in July, shows a new report from the N.C. Sustainable Energy Association and E2 Environmental Entrepreneurs. The report counts clean-energy jobs as those in energy efficiency, renewable energy, electric grid and storage, clean vehicles and clean fuels.
Mecklenburg County, with a significant number of renewable energy jobs and even more related to energy efficiency, saw the state’s largest job losses over the period.
