More than 50 gallons of diesel fuel spills into west Charlotte creek

CHARLOTTE — More than 50 gallons of diesel fuel leaked into a west Charlotte creek Monday morning and now the EPA is involved.

The leak happened around 9 a.m. at Thompson Trucking on Berryhill Road off Wilkinson Boulevard.

Firefighters on scene told Channel 9 that there was a diesel fuel leak on the company’s property and they responded to help contain it.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the scene and could see the fuel spilling into nearby Irwin Creek.

Crews deployed “booms” -- floating barriers designed to contain oil -- in the creek to help slow the spread of the fuel in the water.

Firefighters said the leak was under control and no one was injured. It’s unclear how the leak started.

The clean was expected to be completed by Monday night.
