LINCOLNTON, N.C. — Lincoln County District Attorney's Office says it made disturbing findings about a fired police detective who may have targeted a fellow officer.
The district attorney released a four-page document Tuesday explaining in detail what led up to the firing of Lincolnton Detective Brett Heavner.
Earlier this month, Heavner claimed he was silenced and fired after he discovered the officer was reaching out to a young girl online.
The DA's office said that just isn't the casel.
The DA said because of what it found, there is no need to investigate the Lincolnton Police Department.
The DA's office said this all BEGAN because the officer and his wife were having marital problems.
The officer went on Craiglist to meet adult women.
The DA’s office said Heavner found that and pretended to be a woman.
Heavner, still posing as a woman, exchanged pictures with the officer.
None of the pictures were sexual.
They said Heavner used a picture of a current police officer and it was from when she was 21 years old.
Heavner then brought it to the attention to an assistant district attorney.
The ADA said the officer did nothing wrong because he thought he was talking to an adult woman and there was nothing illegal about it.
After Heavner was fired, Lincolnton police discovered he had downloaded an app that recorded all his phone calls.
When top brass listened to the calls, they heard messages from Heavner concerned the officer was seeking to meet up with a teenage girl.
The chief then met with officer. The officer said it wasn't true and that he was having problems in his marriage and went on Craigslist to meet a woman.
The DA's office said after Heavner found out the officer wasn't going to be investigated, he called Lincoln County Department of Social Services and claimed the officer's child was being abused.
The DA's office said it found no signs of child abuse
Now, the investigation has turned its focus to Heavner and any pending criminal cases he investigated.
Heavner's attorney would not comment until he's read the DA's document.
