Date set for mobile sports betting rollout in North Carolina

NORTH CAROLINA — A date has finally been set for mobile sports betting to launch in North Carolina.

The North Carolina Lottery Commission confirmed Wednesday that you can place bets on your phone starting at noon on March 11. State law required it to roll out by June 15.

The rollout will happen just in time for the ACC men’s basketball championship on March 12 and for March Madness, which begins on March 19. On the day of, the Charlotte Hornets will play the Detroit Pistons and the Southern Conference Basketball Championship will tip off in Asheville.

“With this proposed authorization, we are telling the public we are ready for sports wagering,” said Sterl Carpenter, the deputy executive director of gaming compliance and sports betting. “Now, it is up to our operator applicants they can meet the requirements set up by the General Assembly and by this commission.”

The first bets can be made on mobile devices. In-person wagering will follow on a case-by-case basis, officials said.

The Lottery Commission said it is in the process of reviewing nine applications for betting operators, which include include DraftKings and FanDuel. People can create accounts on authorized apps as soon as March 1.

The sports betting bill passed in summer 2023 but its taken several months to launch.

All sports are eligible for betting except for hose racing. A date to determine those details has not been set yet.
