Decorated WWII veteran celebrates 100 years

GASTONIA, N.C. — Surrounded by family, a well-respected veteran celebrated 100 years around the sun Sunday in Gaston County.

Ray Stewart was drafted when he was only 19 and was assigned the Army’s famed 2nd Armored “Hell on Wheels” Division.

Stewart landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy in June 1944 and fought in many important battles including the Battle of the Bulge.

In 2014 Stewart was one of the senior advisors for the movie “Fury” which tells the story of a tank crew making a final push into Germany during the end of the war.

Fellow veterans, friends, and family gathered at VFW Post 9337 to honor Stewart for his service and had some cake on account of him hitting the century mark.
