IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A 77-year-old North Carolina woman was taken into custody by deputies Feb. 21 after a forgery investigation that began in 2017.
Officials with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said a man told them in August of last year that 25 checks had been drafted from his personal checking account in the amount of $57,000. He told police that he believed a family member, Janet Johnson Huie, 77, was responsible for taking the checks and giving them to her grandson, authorities said.
Investigators said they interviewed Huie after obtaining copies of the checks and other documents and she admitted to taking the checks and forging the victim’s signature.
Authorities said Huie was arrested and charged with one count of felony obtain property by false pretense and 24 counts of forgery of endorsement. She was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center and placed under a $60,000 bond, officials said.
