Speculation continues on future of Chiquita in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — READ THE LATEST: Email: Chiquita closing Charlotte headquarters; 300 possibly out of jobs

There are still no firm answers about what will happen to Chiquita's corporate headquarters in Charlotte following its merger with two Brazilian companies.

A person who works at Chiquita told Eyewitness News says (he or she) has seen a handful of employees -- not just the executives --  boxing up their offices and leaving the company over the past several days.

Channel 9 reported Chiquita's SEC filings confirm CEO Ed Lonergan, and some other top officials got buyouts as part of the merger and have already left.

The source said Monday several employees on the 10th floor, part of the IT department, were also packing up their belongings.

The Channel 9 source was told an announcement on the future of Chiquita in Charlotte could come as soon as this week.

There has been speculation about the company's future when merger and acquisition talks began in 2014.

Now owned by Cutrale-Safra, it seems certain some or all of the operation in Charlotte is in jeopardy.

Charlotte city leaders said they haven't heard anything official from Chiquita on its future in the city.

If Chiquita does leave, lawyers will start going through those incentive contracts see what, if anything, the city and state can get back.
