Driver dead after car overturns in northeast Charlotte, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a fatal crash early Saturday morning in northeast Charlotte.

Officers said the wreck happened just before 1:30 a.m. on West Rocky River Road near Rockland Drive.

According to police, the driver, 26-year-old Ronnell Laberth, was speeding around a curve and drove off the road, down an embankment and struck a dirt retaining wall. The car then went back onto the road and flipped over.

Once officers got to the scene, the found Laberth inside the vehicle. First responders removed the driver from the car and confirmed Laberth dead at the scene.

Authorities said Laberth was the only person in the car, and was wearing a seatbelt. They believe speed was a factor in the crash.
