CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. — Duke Energy released a statement Tuesday hours after a leak at coal ash facility in Cleveland County.
Recent heavy rain caused stormwater to run off Rogers Energy Complex and reach a nearby creek in Mooresboro, Duke Energy officials said in a statement.
The company said it was quickly stopped and the creek was not affected.
The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality did not found visual evidence of impacts to surface water, the agency said in a statement Wednesday.
State officials will continue to investigate the release and will take any necessary enforcement action, DEQ officials said.
DEQ is waiting on test results from water samples taken by the utility that will help determine what was contained in the discharge. Duke Energy must provide a report with additional information within five days, DEQ said Wednesday.
