CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested two men who tried to rob a Waffle House on North Tryon Street Sunday night.
Employees at the restaurant told Channel 9 two men wearing surgical masks jumped the counter around 9 p.m.
Police said one of the suspects fired a single shot inside the business. They then fled without receiving any property, according to police.
During the robbery attempt, two customers were hiding under a table. After the robbery suspects left, the two customers exited the building and got into an SUV. While they were driving away, police said one of the customers who had just left fired a handgun several times at the business. A vehicle and building were struck but no one was injured.
"Yeah, I'm shocked nobody got hit. The bullets went past plenty of people, like a lot of people in here should have been dead right about now," said witness Jermaine Leach.
A short time later, police got behind a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The two individuals detained were identified as Anthony Washington Jr. and Dontay Sowell. Additional information gathered by officers led to the arrests of both men.
Both suspects were taken to police headquarters.
They are each charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied property and damage to property.
Detectives are asking for the public's help to identify the suspects involved in the attempted robbery.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
