BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Two families gathered outside the courthouse in Burke County Wednesday seeking justice for their loved ones.
They carried signs honoring Hiedi Cherry and Sarah Ledford, who both overdosed at two separate locations.
Over the last two years, the sheriff’s office has responded to more than 1,000 overdose calls. 70 of those cases have ended with deaths.
“We do not want this to happen to another family,” said parent Daniel Ledford. “We do not want another family to purchase a headstone.”
Sarah Ledford died back in August and investigators are still waiting on toxicology results. Hiedi Cherry was found dead Sunday morning in Valdese in a case police say remains under investigation.
