'It was swell’: Family gathers outside window of senior facility to celebrate 99th birthday

CHARLOTTE — A Charlotte woman thought her 99th birthday would be a little lonely due to the coronavirus -- but that didn’t stop her loved ones from showing up outside her building for a big surprise.

“It was swell. It was excellent,” said Betty Knox, a resident at Waltonwood Cotswold, an assisted living facility, who celebrated her 99th birthday on Thursday.
