Family of student shot at Albemarle High School releases statement

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The family of the Albemarle High School student who was shot Tuesday has hired a Charlotte attorney for representation.

Student Bernard Miller remains in a Charlotte hospital after, police said, 15-year-old Jalen Russell shot him twice in front of the school.

Russell was charged with assault with a deadly weapon after police said he shot 16-year-old Miller in front of Albemarle High School Tuesday.

"Our firm has been retained to represent the victim concerning the recent shooting at Albemarle High School,” stated attorney Ken Harris. “Of course, our prayers go out to each family affected by this tragic incident. We must clarify that the victim sustained extremely severe injuries during the incident. His prognosis remains uncertain and he faces very substantial challenges from a medical standpoint.

"There has been substantial speculation concerning how and why the incident occurred. The victim's family has been advised by authorities that the investigation remains in its early stages. No conclusions have been drawn related to the progression of events just prior to the incident. We continue our efforts to gather all relevant facts and advise the family appropriately concerning all related legal issues, including potential civil liabilities."
