Former CMPD deputy chief to be sworn in as new SBI director

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new head of North Carolina's State Bureau of Investigation will be sworn in Friday.

Bob Schurmeier and Gov. Pat McCrory spoke exclusively with Eyewitness News reporter Jim Bradley.

Schurmeier is a former deputy chief at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department whom the governor has known for more than 25 years.

They said the current climate surrounding police who are shooting, and being shot at, is unlike anything they've ever seen.

"It's unprecedented and we've all got to take a step back and a deep breath here," Schurmeier said.

Schurmeier and the governor said they're troubled by those who believe police are always in the wrong but said when mistakes are made there has to be accountability.

"In all likelihood, there will be situations where he is going to have to investigative law enforcement agencies within North Carolina from cities and town to sheriff departments," McCrory said.

The governor calls Schurmeier a man who is cool and calm under pressure.

Schurmeier said he doesn’t believe the SBI is an agency that needs to be fixed but said he's still determined to make it better.
