GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A Gaston County Sheriff’s Office detention officer was arrested in Lowell early Friday morning after police said he broke the jaw of a deputy he works with at the Gaston County Jail.

Police said the men were at a house party with at least two other law enforcement officers who tried to break up the fight.

Fellow officers told police Adams continued to punch Mendez then stopped and stepped away before returning three more times, hitting his coworker until he was unconscious on the asphalt.

The assault left Mendez with a possibly fractured eye socket, a fractured jaw and a split tongue.

After the fight, police said Adams punched a truck, denting it.

According to officials, he also registered a 0.18 on an alcohol breath test. Adams was arrested and has been suspended  with no pay pending an internal investigation, according to Sheriff Alan Cloninger.

Channel 9's Ken Lemon learned Adams bonded out minutes after his arrest.

Adams was hired by the Sheriff’s Office in 2014.

Mendez has been treated and released from the hospital.
