LINCOLNTON, N.C. — The tree was so long, the end of it could not be seen in the darkness.
A Lincoln County family's home was damaged after the massive tree crashed on it.
Homeowner David Shook said it is about 100 feet tall and hit his home in Boger City while he and his wife were inside.
"We are lucky. The good Lord was with us," Shook said.
Shook said Wednesday evening he was watching storm coverage on Eyewitness News as strong winds whipped the pine tree outside.
"I heard a big 'whoop.' It almost knocked me out of my chair," he said.
Joyce Shook heard the howling wind. She was lying down.
"Then it got real loud and all of a sudden pop!' like a bomb went off," she said.
The tree hit the front edge of the house, then rolled off and landed on the ground.
"We have been here 32 years and nothing ever happened," Joyce Shook said.
The damage is minimal and they can still live in their home.
However, Joyce Shook said she probably will not sleep very well after that near-miss.
Another family was displaced after a tree hit their home in northwest Charlotte.
The top of the tree went right through the roof.
This happened at Clyde Drive and Elm Lane around 8:30 p.m.
Firefighters were on scene helping the homeowners put tarps over the hole in the roof to keep the rain out.
