LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office is pioneering a unique approach to rescue and recovery missions by utilizing horses.

Officials in South Carolina told our partners at the Rock Hill Herald they believe it could be the first unit of its kind run by a county coroner in the nation.

The initiative will see retired workhorses housed in Union County, working alongside trained riders who are skilled in locating evidence or missing persons. Once located, the riders will then alert law enforcement to take over.

The unit is set to collaborate with various agencies, including those in North Carolina, to navigate and search through challenging terrains. Using the unique capabilities of the horses, they hope to increase effectiveness in difficult-to-reach areas.
