House members challenge sanctuary cities

CHARLOTTE — House Republicans are challenging sanctuary cities, or jurisdictions where local authorities don’t go after people whose only crime is coming to the U.S. illegally.

House Oversight and Government Reform Chair James Comer says sanctuary cities hinder efforts to remove dangerous criminals.

Advocates argue law-abiding, undocumented immigrants should be allowed to stay, pointing to their economic contributions and ties to family members who are citizens.

This comes as officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement report a growing number of immigration-related arrests.

The agency said Monday’s total was more than a thousand – topping the number from Sunday.

False reports of ICE raids

Several immigrant rights organizations in North Carolina have setup hotlines after several false reports of ICE raids.

Multiple witnesses spotted a fake ICE immigration truck in Durham over the weekend.

Shoppers said they saw the truck outside of the Compare Foods on Avondale Drive. They said it looked like a border patrol truck, with a logo, and someone in uniform driving it.

Some said incidents like this have sparked a lot of concern.

“Even just in my school, there hasn’t been ICE or deportation, there’s been a lot of talk about it,” Aniya McNeil, a local resident, told Channel 9. “So, to drive around like that and fearmonger especially when people are already terrified of that right now in a Hispanic neighborhood is insane to me.”

It’s considered a crime to impersonate officers, including ICE.

We’re working to find out if charges will be filed in this case.
