Huntersville Mental Health Facility one step closer to reality

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C.,None — A psychiatric hospital is one step closer to reality.

Huntersville planning commissioners voted for the project. It would be built on Old Statesville Road, near Verhoeff Drive.

Carolinas HealthCare System says its other psychiatric hospital, CMC-Randolph, is bursting at the seams.

"We see this behavioral health facility as a very complementary use, very needed in the community," said Mary Beth Kuzmanovich. <--Who is this? You need to mention her title or something.

Neighbors are worried about their safety.

"All I have to do is take a short walk up the street and I'll be face to face to somebody who is mentally ill," said Ashley Owens.

Town commissioners have the final say. They plan to vote Monday. If they approve the project, the hospital would open Fall 2013.

"We hope that they see our side in it," said Jennifer Canzonieri, who lives in Owens' neighborhood.
