CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two out of four lanes in both directions of Interstate 85 in University City were shut down Friday afternoon after a tractor-trailer crashed over a median barrier.
The accident happened just after 12 p.m. and had northbound traffic backed up to Graham Street and southbound traffic to Harris Boulevard.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a car with a woman and child inside hydroplaned.
Troopers said the driver of the tractor-trailer tried to avoid the car before the two vehicles crashed and the truck plowed into the median.
Video shows a firefighter holding what appears to be an infant taken from the car. MEDIC personnel then came over to wrap a blanket around the child.
The tractor-trailer was left dangling over the median toward the opposite side of traffic.
Officials said oil spilled from the truck during the crash and the rain made cleanup difficult. Lanes were still closed and traffic was backed up through rush-hour.
Troopers said the child was not hurt.
They said the driver of the car and truck were taken to the hospital as a precaution but are expected to be OK.
The lanes reopened early Friday night.
