I-85 bridge to be named after fallen Concord police officer in ceremony Friday

CONCORD, N.C. — Concord city leaders will dedicate a bridge on Friday to a police officer who lost his life in the line of duty in 2020.

The bridge is at Bruton Smith Boulevard and Interstate 85. It will be named the Officer Jason N. Shuping Memorial Bridge.

Officer Shuping died in a shootout outside a Sonic restaurant near Bruton Smith Boulevard in Dec. 2020.

The bridge dedication ceremony starts at 2 p.m. Friday. It’s part of Cabarrus County Law Day, which shows appreciation for officers and honors those who died in the line of duty.

The dedication was announced after a petition with more than 8,200 signatures circulated on social media back in early 2021.

In April, Officer Shuping’s widow, Haylee, announced a $25,000 scholarship in his memory. The Officer Jason Shuping Memorial Public Safety Endowed Scholarship will honor Shuping’s legacy and benefit Rowan-Cabarrus Community College students enrolled in the school’s basic law enforcement training program.
